As of typing this review and having unlocked all the achievements of the game, played through Ada’s campaign, as well as Mercenaries mode I have a good grasp of how well done the game is. To start off, as someone hyped to play the upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake, I thought it best to try out how the original was. Suffice to say it was a fun, however irritating experience at times. The game has no doubt not aged the best. I don’t doubt that it was revolutionary and amazing for its time and is still fun to play today; it certainly does not match up in any way to today’s standards as far as game design goes. I am confident that the upcoming Re4 remake will iron out a lot of these issues, which I don’t blame the game for having just to be clear.

For one, Ashley’s ai is very basic and this makes for some very annoying encounters. She can only follow you, duck when you aim her direction, and hide in garbage bins. This duck mechanic proves problematic during battle however because there would be times when you would be swarmed by enemies and she would simply duck as ganados surround her and either pick her up or attack her, putting you in an unnecessarily precarious position. Second, the horror aspect of the game is not very present, only really present for the Village section, which is no doubt the highlight of the game with it then falling from there.

Turrets are also an irritating experience to deal with as well as since there is no movement during aiming, you can’t peek around a corner with your sniper and you are forced to either circle around the turret to shoot the gunner in the back or walk into the open and quickly snipe the gunner in the head. This is even more mind numbing to deal with in the Island section of the game when they make you deal with not one, not two, but three turret gunners that you have to pick off whilst fighting off hordes of roving ganados with shock batons and flails, all whilst having very minimal cover.

With that said, I enjoyed playing through the campaign, albeit not being the biggest fan of the escort mission aspect of it. The Mercenaries mode was also fun to play although of course at times it can suffer from the tank controls aspect of the game I’ve listed. Ada’s campaign was also fun but felt short and could’ve perhaps featured a few more missions, along with a wider variety of weapons to use. Overall, I would rate the game an 8/10 for its fun yet aged gameplay.

Scary now? Not so much. The graphics are too outdated, but they still look great. The gameplay really holds up despite its PS2-era clunkiness. It’s difficult to put the game down. It’s just FUN – in a goofy, funhouse sort of way. A few sections still get me tense; certain rooms on the island (if you’ve played before, you know the ones; the sound design holds up more than anything) and the garden maze. LORD, the garden maze honestly chaps my a$$! How many jump scares is too many? Oh gee I don’t know, maybe like 20 of em back-to-back! As dogs hopped over the hedges from every direction, I exclaimed, ‘It’s TOO many DOGS!’ As dogs were falling out of the f*cking sky onto my f*cking head, I shrieked, ‘IT’S TOO MANY DOGS!!!!!’ No less anxiety-inducing now than it was 17 years ago.
