Since ‘into the rift’ came out I thought I should give this DLC a try first (I never finished it before). Avorion has never been really big on storylines in my opinion because everything is randomly generated. The main storyline is the only good one in my opinion. This DLC is mostly fetch quests. You get to choose who you work for (one of 3 crime organizations). After a certain point, two of them will turn hostile. There are no stakes or consequences and little to no branching dialog, so you can easily skip through all of it.
It’s just more of the same… The only addition is the black market which, with a couple of mods, doesn’t really add anything. It basically gives you a random selection of great gear that you probably can’t use due to the material knowledge gatekeeping that version 2.0 introduced.
The new storyline is intended to be started fairly early in the game, around when you first get access to the 3rd of the seven material types. It’s solid. I thought that the new missions were entertaining and used the new game mechanics in a good way, and the characters / story are about as in-depth as you can expect from a space sim sandbox. It’s also very robust. I tried several times to break it during the closed beta and I couldn’t do it. If you’re playing this on an existing save and you’re late into the game, you will be able to easily crush the story. That’s just how it is. That said, there are a couple of new missions where things are a little wonky and very difficult to push past if you don’t know what you’re doing. If a boss seems especially difficult, try to watch it carefully while you’re fighting and see if you can figure out a solution. That’s all I’m going to spoil for you. Unfortunately, I haven’t participated in the big endgame event. I might update this review if I do, but it’s also possible I may forget about it entirely. IMO even just the stuff I covered above justifies buying the DLC, especially since it is much cheaper than I expected.
