I remember playing outlast for the first time. The sheer terror of psychological horror made me almost want to stop playing the game back then. As a horror fan, this was everything I wanted. Fast forward to Outlast 2 and the quality still hasn’t dropped. Red Barrels have proven that they’re good at providing consistent quality to the Outlast games. After I finished Outlast 2, I promised myself never to play it again. It was that terrifying for me. The game perfectly captured the themes of religious fanaticism and incorporated it perfectly into the Murkoff Corporation’s ‘tests’. They also nailed the ‘village in the middle of the mountains’ vibe because half the time I had no idea where I was going and it added to the terror. The whole game felt like pure nightmare fuel. I was on edge the whole time. To sum it up, the game was 10/10 and I’m excited for future Outlast games.

Being a huge fan of the first Outlast, I really wanted to love this game. Unfortunately, it seems to have missed (or simply eschewed) a lot of what worked so well in the first game. The shift from claustrophobic hallways to open forest means environments are harder to visually parse and navigate, which I assume the developers intended to evoke dread and hopelessless, but generally is just confusing and frustrating. The first game favored areas that allowed for running away, hiding, and regrouping. In this game, many sections fall victim to trial-and-error with a likelihood of repeated deaths that feel more like poorly put together puzzles. Sadly, repetition is not scary. Similarly, the game regularly breaks its own momentum with sequences that interrupt gameplay and psychological pacing.

The story is engaging enough, and I appreciated the effort to package it a little differently than Outlast 1 and to avoid repeating what many considered a weak ending, but I think the overall effect is more extravagent but less cohesive and enganging for the player. All that said, the game looks great and has some genuinely interesting and enjoyable moments. I don’t regret buying it or playing it, but I did find it inferior to the first game.

Outlast 2 is a brilliant horror game and nearly the perfect sequel. It builds upon the distressing original, adding more diversity and jumbling the pieces so the rules aren’t as transparent. Running and hiding is still a massive part of the experience, but it is less rigid because of natural hiding spaces and smarter world design. It is a much longer game than its predecessor, yet packed with variety to keep the scares fresh. With interludes like a school nightmare and a water rafting trip from hell, the stress levels never drop for long. This raw delivery of horror, relying on just a few basic hooks, is notable because it maintains such frightening stability. With Outlast 2, Red Barrels have created a new standard of horror that is so distressing that you may not want to come up for air.
