Solid game where you can see its inspirations from various points of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Gameplay is primarily dungeon-crawling like SMT1, character growth system involves scanning attacks like in Devil Survivor, or purchasing new skills akin to Digital Devil Saga. There’s also a wide variety of skills and attacking elements with enemies having varying affinities that you have to work around, while you have to manage your own elemental affinities with the equipment you wear.
It does fall short in a few places. Story is pretty sparse – you’re a security guard suddenly stuck in a mall when it’s infested by demons, and you have to fight your way through waves of demons to find the way out, rescuing survivors and teaming up with others who can fight like you can with the help of a mysterious device you’ve found. I also feel that the interface could be improved – your characters’ resistances and vulnerabilities can be inferred from the equipment they wear but the game seems to think they have weakness where the equipment doesn’t say. You’ve got a whole lot of buffs and debuffs to manage – one for each stat – but with a limited skill capacity of 6 and so many stats governing different things, the game would do better to condense its buffs and debuffs. (Not that I mind, I’ve managed to ignore buffs for most part until the final boss) Still, it’s a decent game for an indie developer. It definitely scratched my itch for SMT-esque combat and customization when I’m not playing SMT Nocturne. I look forward to what they’ll come up with next.
