No doubt is Asura a bit overwhelming at first glance, as it feels like a standard dungeon crawling looter with a ton of RPG elements thrown right in your face. Like many a great roguelike before it, it only takes a couple of playthroughs to get a grasp of how to harness this wild horse. It’s cool setting and well balanced skill tree allow any Diablo diggin’ roguelike lovin’ landlubber to jump in have a good ole time. Plenty of items, abilities, and even characters to unlock here, providing plenty of playtime for your buck. As far as decent action roguelikes go, this game is A-sure-a thing. I was pleasantly surprised by Asura. The game is simple yet enjoyable, it has randomness – both good and bad – though the (limited) sound track would probably get on my nerves if I played for more than a dozen hours. The game itself has five varied levels, but the end of level boss fight picks from a fairly large pool, so it isn’t the same thing every time. The map is annoying, due to a level of backtracking, and a mini-map would have been appreciated. Thankfully, the core of the game – the combat itself is extremely smooth. There are indeed grammatical errors, but frankly not enough to interfere with my enjoyment of the core gameplay, which is solid.
Is Asura a game I’ll play for dozens of hours (given my library) – no it isn’t. Is it a complete, polished work that I can enjoy for a change? Absolutely. Is it a great first game for the two man team? Absolutely. If you’re looking for a game with strong production values and an Indian mythological flavor, I’d say this one is a strong entry. If you’re looking for a Diablo II / III replacement, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for something fresh (the Absorb / Salvage mechanic), definitely go for it.
