Once a profile is set up properly VoiceAttack works really well, reduces need to reach for difficult keys and can be used to hold buttons etc. which really helps reduce strain to hands. I wish this thing came with every computer by default so I could use it at work as well.
It’s possible to use Windows speech recognition “at the same time”, since you can toggle Windows speech on and off with VoiceAttack. With the two you can do almost everything on the computer using only voice commands.
Flaws / why try the free version first:
1. If the microphone isn’t good enough, the computer doesn’t hear you and that’s it. It will not work. Just try the free version first to check everything works.
2. It takes moderate to massive effort/time to set up the profiles. You can only import existing VoiceAttack profiles, not simple lists of commands.
3. Remembering the commands can be difficult. VoiceAttack doesn’t come with anything to help with remembering the commands other than the list inside the program settings…. BUT if you have time and energy it’s definitely possible to make a voice controlled “assistant” inside VoiceAttack that could be asked to list available commands.
TLDR; Try the free version, it’s good.
program works quite well. It does not always 100% of the time recognize someones voice simply because that is almost impossible due to circumstances beyond the control of the developers. Like a loud fan blowing in the background or an annoying wife screaming upstairs at the same time as you give the command to fire a torpedo. I have used this program primarily for Star Wars Rogue Squadron because there are a hellalot of commands from “shields front/shields rear” to “target last target/target attacker”. It works incredibly well for this and it makes the game itself more realistic as I imagine by the time we build x-wings they will be voice commanded. Actually I doubt we are going to need pilots to pilot anything by the time x-wings and the force finally come into existence, but that has nothing to do with reviewing voiceattack.
This program is absolutely worth the cost. As I have said it not only makes games more fun but more immersive and even realistic. Of course I use it for VR but I’ve also used it for Cyberpunk and a few others. It wasn’t really needed for these games as they have simple controls and I’d basically just use it to bring up the map easily. Still it’s very fun to say something and have something happen afterwards simply because of your voice. Anyone working on or with this tech should be encouraged to continue to do so. I’ve thought that video games should have many voice commands for years now, like saying “Cast” “Blizzard” “Inferno” or whatever in my favorite RPGs or “House” “Fine Road” “Dirt Road” for civilization building games. Imagine just saying “Pipe” and a pipe appears in your hand to lay under your “Roads” which then appear in your hand which you lay in front of your “Homes”… You get the point. Developers should be already doing this in video games but since in most cases they aren’t, now you can.” Besides you’ll do a better job anyway as everyone is different so setting up your own voice commands through Voiceattack is a good idea.
