Whilst you initially start with a pair of characters at your disposal, as you unlock more characters, it increases the pool of characters that you can -randomly- pick from. It runs contrary to the idea of player agency from the outset, (And given one of the characters, the druid, is flat out inferior to the others, this is unfortunate). But it’s made even more unfortunate by the starting perk system, which grants players random perks that help you progress- of which some -vastly- outweigh the utility of others…and which feel necessary because of the way the game handles enemy scaling.
See, when you play the initial level, enemies damage and health is on the low side, but every stage cleared past the first, these values increase exponentially. By the time you’re at the final stage, it can take upwards of a minute to kill a single enemy (Who might be spamming the room endlessly with minions and bullets- and who are capable of 2 shotting you) – if the stars didn’t align to provide you with any means of increasing your attack power. Which happens more frequently than I’d like.
