I am happy and proud to say that DMC 5 is everything I wanted it to be, everything I hoped it would be, and much greater than anything I could have expected.The story is the best in the series. Not once did I feel bored, uninterested, unengaged, or anything like that. The story had me hooked from start to finish. The voice acting is wonderful, the character acting and animations are so lively and energetic, and the cinematography and choreography are the most thrilling and captivating in the whole series.

Nero has also been massively improved from his previous iteration in DMC 4. He’s much simpler compared to Dante, albeit that really isn’t saying much considering I’d say nothing compares to the complexity of Dante, but he’s still plenty of fun in his own right. His exceed mechanic has been overhauled to be more user friendly. It’s no longer a painstaking endeavor to time your exceed gauge to pull off powerful moves. Similar to Dante’s Royal Guard timing, Nero’s exceed window has been expanded upon and is now much more forgiving.

Missing that perfect window frame for exceeding and royal guarding no longer punishes you, instead it just rewards you a bit less than what you’d get if you had timed it better. This makes going for these risky plays more viable and incentivizes you to try them more often to get better. Furthermore, Nero gets his Devil Breakers in this game, which opens up an infinite number of combos as well as utility for Nero that all feel like the perfect and most natural evolution of his character and combat sense.

V, the mysterious newcomer, is the most unique in his gameplay style out of any DMC character of any DMC game. He himself doesn’t fight, instead he has his demon familiars that he controls that do most of the heavy lifting. They are V’s only source of damage as well as a huge chunk of his mobility options. Shadow allows V to side step better and travel on the ground faster, whereas Griffon gives V the ability to double jump (the equivalent of the Air Hike) as well as allows him to hover over short distances. And finally, Vergil. Vergil is the best he’s ever been. I really enjoyed his depiction in 3 and 4, and I loved how he played in the reboot, but Vergil in this game truly fits the description they use for him. The alpha and the omega has never felt better. His moves are POWERFUL, his attacks are plentiful, stylish and devastating. He has the best mobility in the entire game. I have such a hard time choosing who I prefer out of Dante and Vergil in this game.

Dante definitely does more and has more combat options (as is true for every DMC game where Dante and Vergil are playable), but Vergil’s smaller and more focused arsenal of weaponry and moves make his gameplay style simply badass and efficient. In short, I think Dante is great at every single thing he can do (of which there is an uncountable amount), whereas Vergil is simply the best at the relatively smaller amount of things he can do.

The boss fights, of which there is plenty, are all fun and creative. Might be the best in the series, which is not something I say lightly, considering DMC 3 and DMC 1 are in the series in question. The soundtrack is undoubtedly the best this series has to offer. Be it battle music, character theme songs, or just atmospheric music that plays only in certain missions, I found the auditory experience here to be simply immaculate all throughout the game.
