Never seen a game at this price range delivering so much depth through a simple structure of mechanics. At my first look I thought that the gameplay was a bit odd and simplistic, but oh man, I was so wrong! After playing an hour of the campaign I realized that every single move is VERY important and every single mistake that might seem insignificant is in fact, a game changer. The AI destroyed me and forced me to find weak points and rely on every single mechanic of the terrain system. After beating this type of AI, the victory feels very good and significant especially if the AI will beat the c**p out of you the first three matches(my case). My single problem with the game is that the Operation Typhoon feels very unbalanced and unfair for the Germans. It is nearly impossible to win against Soviets. A small and slick game that will give you a few hours of entertainment. Easy to learn, hard to master. The game plays out on an operational level in very chess like map divided into provinces. The A.I plays pretty well and the game implements a few special rules for the russians as well as the germans to simulate real world events. The game utilises a very unique system of phases during a turn in which you only can activate and move units in particular province before the phase returns to the opposing player. That means you can not coordinate things in advance but have to take into account every countermove from the opponent. Interesting system which forces you to prioritize which units to move and attack with.
Played through the different scenarios and won the campaign. This is a light wargame with a limited map and limited strategic decisions. It does provide some light entertainment though. Do I recommend it? Well, for the low cost it is fun enough to whittle away a few hours, but it really did feel like sometimes success or victory was at the toss of a die. I think the small scale made the “luck” component much more significant. Wargames with much larger scale (and way more rolling) seem to even out the randomness. If steam had a “meh” rating, I’d give it that.
