Fears to Fathom is an episodic psychological horror game where each episode unveils a short story narrated by the ones who survived. You’re browsing the fifth installment of the Fears to Fathom anthology. In the fifth episode of Fears to Fathom you play as Sydney Harper, a 23-year-old working at a consulting firm plans a weekend getaway to a rental in Woodbury with her college friends. Little did they know what was about to unfold during their stay. Sydney survived as she made the right choices. This game is primarily a first-person narrative walking simulator with exploration, driving, fishing and conversation mechanics. This series peaked in scariness with 3 whereas 4 and 5 are just more of the same as we have come to expect and love but despite the chases losing their impact – the jumpscares still offered a heavy dose of adrenaline and the plot was a lot more involved this time around with good twists. The spooky atmosphere and high detail in the environments is better than ever in this latest episode. I really enjoyed the mini games and felt like more options were available in certain scenarios than previous installments. That said, to me this was the weakest episode in terms of story or plot unfortunately. It missed the mark on having the same charm that the other episodes have in relation to the situation you are in and the story unfolding. I particularly did not enjoy the end sequence – it felt messy and much less clear on what my options were compared to the other episodes. There are some glitches here and there like when catching fish if we enter steam overlay, the caught fish will be there for the rest of your game, there are similar glitches but aside from that it is a really enjoyable and definitely unnerving game. This is one of my favourite horror game series and so glad even the last instalment in the series lived up to my expectations.
