It’s a good game, and the price point is right. I’ve played it for nearly 12 hours, and I feel about done with it, so that’s about 50 cents per hour. But you could play longer if you’re the type to get really invested with leaderboards.
The biggest problem with the game, I think, is that it’s far too easy to break. Each run builds up currency which can be used to purchase upgrades to the various classes, and these upgrades carry over between runs, and there’s a bonus damage upgrade you can upgrade a large (infinite?) number of times. Once you’ve gotten these upgrades your run STARTS at being able to take on S+ level enemies before you even pick up a single item, and it only takes one really broken run to get all the points you need to unlock everything (easy to do with Shotgun). After that all challenge vanishes from the game, as you become nearly unstoppable.
And that’s fun, for a little while. But like playing on God Mode in any game, it gets boring quickly. And this is not helped by the low amount of enemy variety and the fact that the games difficulty scaling just involves giving the same enemies more health, meaning that when the game becomes ‘difficult’ again it just involves it taking an eternity to actually kill anything. And often when you become actually threatened it will be because something you can’t see just randomly dealt damage to you and ended your run, which isn’t very satisfying. And that sounds like some very harsh criticism, but it’s not really. I still like the upgrades in the game, I still had a fun time with it, and at a $6 price point I think it’s more than earned the money I invested in it. I just think the devs need to work on balancing the upgrades that carry over between runs to maintain a greater sense of challenge and keep they players interest longer. Maybe add some new units too. – You don’t need to go crazy with that, I know adding new assets can be difficult and annoying, just a few more geometric shapes, and maybe making it so things can spawn with different colors instead of all being monochromatic on each level, just little things like that to give us a bit more visual variety.
