Super fun and must play rogue lite game for fans of the genre. A great follow up to the original. Lots of progress and replayability that can keep you busy for a long time. As a 2D game it has lots of platforming but keeps the platforming fresh by switching up many of the platforming mechanics in each biome. The class, weapon and trait variety means that almost every run will feel different from the last (unless you don’t want to and the game does give you the ability to lock some of the randomness down if you prefer 1 play style). The New Game + also gives the game a lot of replayabiilty even after beating the game with lots of different modifiers (similar to Hades) where you can increase the difficulty for increased rewards/power/progression to climb higher and higher NG+.
Like its predecessor, the game involves you playing as successive descendants on a quest to beat all the bosses of a massive castle with a randomized layout for some MacGuffn or other. Each time you die, you choose a successor from a set of descendants of different character classes (that you unlock via the skill tree) to continue the quest. Each descendant will have their own set of skills, a magic attack, and possibly a special attribute that will make the game harder, or at least a little more interesting. The more debilitating the attribute, the more money you earn. In between generations, you use the gold you accumulate to unlock blocks in the skill tree which builds your castle. These blocks can be things like unlocking character classes or permanent stats, or other little bonuses. In this way you slowly become stronger and are able to progress further.
All of the character classes have their own special abilities and quirks, but they’re all pretty fun to play as. There weren’t any that I really hated playing as. Also new to this game (I think) are special settings called “House Rules” that can adjust the difficulty of the game drastically. One of my favorites was the ability to turn contact damage off. No more getting hurt by bumping into enemies! This is also nice because if you finally get sick of playing this game, you can adjust the setting to make it incredibly easy and just steamroll to the end of the game.
