The Sequence 2 is a lightweight “visual programming” puzzle. With the ruleset conceptually close to Zachtronics’ games, it features a variety of levels, from finding the single possible solution in a tight space to relatively free-form problem solving. And the problems it delivers. The difficulty curve here rises pretty high even during a ‘normal’ walkthrough, with many levels requiring non-trivial setup to beat them at all. If you aim for the scores, though (the last achievement here is a pretty good benchmark), it goes extreme, almost to the Zachtronics heights. What’s especially impressive here is that the ruleset is very compact, and the complexity lies entirely in the emergent effects, with elegant patterns arising as one tries to optimize the solutions. The most complex ones, such as the best solution to the last level, are something that I probably couldn’t have found myself.
There is a major oversight here: per-level highscores are missing. It means that you’ll have a way harder time improving, as you lack information what to focus on (“Can there be a better solution, or am I wasting my time?”). Of course, the global leaderboard is here to tease you, but it’s not quite a replacement. Also, it’s a mobile port, even if a decent one, so the UI is mildly annoying at times. Starting around level 55, you learn that binary units are no longer static entities: levels contain “starter” binary units that need to be merged to create a binary unit whose On/Off pattern matches the goal. Often in later levels, you need to set up two or three distinct assembly lines that take the available binary units, combine them in distinct ways to match the distinct goal-spots, and then deliver them in the correct orientation to their respective goal-spot.
With a total of 121 levels, and the final module-type (“reverse polarity,” for fans of the prequel) not unveiled until level 67, you might worry that the game risks feeling a bit unbalanced. YMMV, but I’m around level 75, and so far progression feels really good. It’s taken me ~9 hours to get here, and that doesn’t include some time I’ve spent thinking about screenshots offline. Each time a new module or mechanic gets introduced, you get a few easy tutorial-like levels (though, thankfully, the forced march “click here now” tutorials from the prequel have largely been removed). With each new step I’ve felt like I’ve just barely mastered the step before, then I get a little breather, and then challenge ramps up again, and before long I’m scratching my head and cursing. Feels good. No more hint points to help if you get stuck, but you typically have quite a few levels to work on at a time.
