Lonely Mountains is a good game. It’s a good game that decided to be mediocre instead. It could’ve been great if it focused on what made the early entries in the Trial series so great: Getting to know a track, slowly honing your skills and eventually mastering the game by overcoming increasingly difficult routes. Getting better times by being able to ride harder lines because you improved your technical skills. Lonely mountains had everything in place for that: Solid mechanics, a good selection of tracks, a lot of room for optimization by offering a plethora of routes. But sadly it all falls a bit flat once you realize that none of it is necessary because you will even beat the “expert” tracks by at least 20 or 3 seconds after playing a track just a few times. You will never take or even see most routes because there is no need for. There is no challenge. Lonely hills wastes most of its potential by just being too casual for its own good. Instead the devs bizarrely decided to add night races which add nothing of value, just randomness and frustration and do nothing but push the game’s focus further in the wrong direction even more: Instead of skillfully navigating the fastest route down the mountain you’ll blindly and veeery slowly crawl towards the finish line – it’s just wrong.
