Look, I really, really love this idea, and when i saw this at E3, I almost knew that at i would end up buying it, my favourite game of all time has to be Fire Watch, so when I saw the trailer for Road 96, and saw how similar they looked and sounded, i was so excited. (I have to say as well, No, I didn’t expect this game to be exactly like Fire Watch, I just thought they would be mildly similar)But when I started the game, I realised, “wait, my character is silent. Oh” Then, awhile after that I was like “Am i doing anything? I’ve spoken to all these characters, done chores for them, gave my condolences to a man who lost his wife, helped two idiots ROB A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ STORE, and yet i don’t feel as if i have done anything to the country I’m trying so hard to escape. Why does my SILENT character have to be in this story? I might as well go watch a movie.”
I didn’t feel anything playing this… the characters are BARELY three dimensional, like the main cover girl (literally forgot her name btw) is all like “yO i DoNt wAnNa LiVE iN bAd cOUnTrY aNyMoRe CuZ mY DAd eViL, bUt i aLsO lOvE hIM” as if that’s not like every “bad ass” female character in the history of ever. You just stand there, the entire game and say stupid ♥♥♥♥ like, “what do you think of the evil mfs who kill teenagers” and then they have some dumb script answer that cant be changed because again, these characters are BARELY 3D. It upsets me because the pitch is so good, but the actual game, is Mid. One thing they got perfect though was the music, so guess its not all bad…I had a joy playing it til the very end. There were parts that made me cry with just how good the story meshes all together. From lovable characters like John to goofy ones like stan and mitch. I felt like I love every single one of them and wanted to make sure they were gonna be alright and alive in the end.
The idea of having politics in your game is nothing new but making it interesting and doing it an unique way is always refreshing and helps a game be more enjoyable. This is probably one of the times that I genuinely paid attention to the politics in a game. I love the feeling of the game almost feeling like a rouge like with each run to the Road 96 feeling unique and special. It makes each play through that much refreshing and having new game plus to go to areas you couldn’t go to before you didn’t have the skill for it feels satisfying. The soundtrack and art in this game is honestly amazing. I felt amazed at just how great the music sounded and how it portrayed emotions perfectly. Collecting tapes to listen to when you could also felt amazing. Like Each meeting with each character meant something. My only complaint with the game is sometimes during the cut scenes the animation would be a little wonky but it didn’t bother me too much.
