Negatives: The use of influence over warlords is a prime example of how a game mechanic in combination with the unpolished state of the game makes for some annoying moments, so I will use that to exemplify. In Warlords, you can either conquer warlords to your side by force or by spending influence points to demand their obedience. Spent influence points decay over time. The influence points you spend on warlords go up to a maximum of 300. If you control a certain warlord, the enemy AI might during the game try to capture it from you. The capture by force method works just fine, nothing much to say about that. But the influence points method is another story.
Once you realize the enemy is trying to capture your warlord through influence (by hearing an announcement by the warlord where he says that “a foreign lord is courting us” or something similar), the only way to stop the capture is by spending your own influence to trump out the enemy’s. After a while of this back an forth you will reach 300 influence points, and this is where the trouble starts. Once both you and the AI has 300 influence points over the warlord the enemy AI will continuously wait for you your influence to drop by a few points (to 298 or similar) and then try to capture the warlord. Then you have to go into the warlords menu, spend influence to get up to 300 again to deal with this. Less than a minute later, the same process takes place anew, as the enemy
AI again has waited for your influence to go down a few points. This spam will go on for a good while, either until you, in the middle of the heat of battle, forget to go in and click on the influence button, or the AI finally stops. There is a way to spend influence points automatically on a warlord, but this mechanic can’t be used in this situation, since it is shuts down once you reach 300. So you have to spend the points manually. While I understand that this mechanic is supposed to create some tension for the player, it mostly comes off as annoying. Because you usually have enough influence points to spend, the only reason you might loose one of these spam races, is that you forget to go in and click a button.
