Total War Three Kingdoms is a turn-based strategy tactical based video game and is similar to the other games in the series. The game is the 12th main entry in the Total War Series. It is set in the three kingdoms period. The player will assume the control of one of the game 12 factions while you must have to eliminate other factions, unify China and become the ultimate ruler of China. The three factions are led by different warlords such as Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian. You have to fight siege battles and in the battles, you will command both infantry and cavalry units. The units featured in the game are divided into different retinues which are controlled by powerful generals.

In the Total War, you can deploy up to three generals in a battlefield at a time with three in reserve while you will only have the access to the units that said generals have the ability to recruit. You will only win a siege battle if all the opponents are killed and the central point of the city is captured. You can also command separately from your troops and can loot unique ancillaries from the enemies once they are killed. Generals can engage in a one versus one dueling which only ends when one of the generals dies or flee away.

Each general will have different class and specialties. You can grant your units both active and passive buffs. The guanxi mode of the game will allow different generals to form relationships with other characters. The generals will have different personalities and desires that you need to cater to.
