Say howdy to West of Loathing — a single-player slapstick comedy adventure role-playing game set in the wild west of the Kingdom of Loathing universe. Talk your way out of trouble as a silver-tongued Snake Oiler, plumb the refried mysteries of the cosmos as a wise and subtle Beanslinger, or let your fists do the talking as a fierce Cow Puncher Explore a vast open world and encounter a colorful cast of characters, some of whom are good.

many of whom are bad, and a few of whom are ugly. A sprawling open world, chock full of danger, quests, puzzles, and mysteries. It’s worth picking up just for the tone, ridiculous items, ability to do bean magic, choose to ride a crazy horse for the ‘insensitive’ achievement, explore the depths of spitoons (it’s just as bad as it sounds, so WoL doubles as a horror game), receive XP-charged air from you brother, get a separate perk for hurting yourself on cacti too many times… and, most luxuriously of all, change the game’s font to Arial.

West of Loathing Pre-Installed:

Immediately after your unlikely duo of metalhead heroes manage to crash their car right in front of what appears to be Zombie Central, everything turns from weird to weirder; including your protagonist Malcolm ending up with one of the funniest hint delivery systems in gaming history stuffed right into his pocket. (Feel free to use it now and then even if you aren’t stuck, it offers some very amusing moments). Any more story details will, I feel, take away from your enjoyment, but suffice to say that the writing is quite polished. The dialogues are successful in delivering both jokes and a sense of character, and the insane plot ends up holding your interest despite (or because of) its absurdity. There are some unexpected twists and turns to enjoy.
