The gameplay loop will be familiar to anyone with a little experience in strategy or deckbuilding games: you start off by choosing from an array of characters (optionally made all available up front through a menu setting), each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Prior to each combat encounter, you will choose the type of reward that you want to receive for winning. These range from new cards, to ship upgrades, to tokens used to enhance your odds in one of the game’s many random encounter story events. As far as the plot goes, I am admittedly not very far into the game, but the premise is nothing new: in the past, humanity pulled some quantum levers and unleashed horrors beyond man’s comprehension into our reality. While you can’t see PRECISELY what you’ll be getting, knowing ahead of time what to expect for surviving combat gives a feeling of being in control of your build– you can focus on acquiring more cards to use in combat, go for an artifact that gives powers to the ships in your fleet, or just try to rack up some good old-fashioned space cash. The combat mechanics won’t satisfy a Paradox-level strategy game itch, but there’s enough there to keep things interesting.
