If you’re going to make a horror video game set in an asylum at this point in history, you want it to be pretty darned good. Why? Because: a. it’s been done to death, and b. Outlast is a thing. I realise the Unreal store offers easy-to-use (maybe free?) assets for a setting like this, but that’s still no excuse to make the dullest possible decisions on every given account.
You awake in a hospital room, not knowing how you got there. You search around, and sure enough you’re locked in. Any of this sound familiar yet? I mean, this would all be good and well if it was done with considerable panache, but it regrettably comes with drab writing, unintuitive controls, impenetrably dark lighting, ugly visuals, clunky sound effects, robotic voice acting, and some of the worst voice recording I’ve heard in my life (half the time the voice sounds like it’s submerged in water)! I gave up about twenty minutes in, while looking for the door that my…fourth or fifth key would be able to open?! By this stage I’d experienced a couple of mildly effective jump scares, but that’s about all this game has to offer.
