Darkwood provides a new perspective on survival horror. Scavenge and explore the rich, ever-changing free-roam world by day, then hunker down in your hideout and pray for the morning light. This one was stressful, awesome, and terrifyingly unique. The top-down perspective somehow makes the horror even worse, especially combined with the incredible sound design that constantly keeps you on edge. The atmosphere is oppressive, the world feels cruel and unpredictable, and the game never tries to comfort you. Every choice feels dangerous, every night feels like a test of endurance, and the slow uncovering of its dark, disturbing story is deeply unsettling.

Darkwood is a survival horror game that drops you into a twisted, hostile forest and asks you to survive without clear explanations or guidance. By day, you explore, scavenge, and slowly learn the layout of the world; by night, you barricade yourself in and endure relentless, nerve-wracking threats. This is hands down the scariest game I have ever played, and on top of that the storytelling is beautiful, and gameplay is engaging. I was very hesitant to play this game, but decided to buy it only because a friend told me I had to give it a shot.
