Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved is a brand new Detective ADV/Visual Novel, in the style of classic adventure games from Japan. Investigate areas and interrogate witnesses on the path towards solving the mystery and uncovering a sinister conspiracy! The artstyle – reminiscent of 90s manga/VNs – is super charming and reminds me of Urasawa’s work translated into a pixel aesthetic. Animations are well done and lend a lot of nuance even inside lines – you can tell the developers really cared about the specific timings of certain words and micro-reactions to create an immersive feel while reading the dialogue.

Characters are charming. You have a mix of generally grounded characters – your protagonist, Emma, professor – and a mix of weird goofballs that toe the line from comic to menacingly comic. Particular shout-out to the two golf-bros, who have no business being so in-sync as they are. This game was absolutely wonderful! I’m a big fan of JP ADV titles and have been following this for quite a long time. As expected, I was gripped by the game from start to finish. The team’s love for the JP ADV genre is clear & expressed here with heartfelt sincerity. Fans of deeper cut classics in the genre like Famicom Detective Club will find so much to love here.
