You are Isaac, a 6-month-old baby, developing mysterious psychic powers. What you want most is to be loved and accepted by your family, but a secretive tech corporation wants you for their own. The game features an immersive “camera as controller” mode, expanding on the innovative use of camera-based technology that the development team is known for. Goodnight Universe lets you see the world through my eyes… or at least, my big, wobbly, baby head. And let me tell you, this world is weird, noisy, and sometimes overwhelming… but also full of wonder, love, and the deep ache of wanting to belong. The game nails the feelings of curiosity, that drive to poke, crawl, babble, put things in my mouth, and connect with a family that doesn’t always seemed tuned in, but just might care more than my baby brain can comprehend. Every scene and room tells you more about the story, ever silence holds weight. It shares a similar concept as Before Your Eyes by the same directors and designers, but is much better executed in my opinion. The mechanics work really well with the story and were used fittingly to make the game both fun and affecting. They also nailed the technical part – the eyes and facial tracking worked almost flawlessly for me. And unlike Before Your Eyes, it doesn’t give you dry eyes by compelling you to not blink for a minute or so, which was quite frustrating and not fun.

• Example: One mechanic involves closing your eyes (via webcam) and turning your head to “tune” into someone’s mind.
